| Easy Ways to Save Energy on the Cheap |
|
1. Keep your garage door closed. If you keep your garage door closed then you can't get your car out. Huge savings in energy right there. Also it helps to maintain temperature balance in your home on those hot and cold days. 2. Buy local produce. It is fresher and it uses less oil for transportation. That's good, right? Produce is easier to ship long distance if it's not ripe. Most produce in the US spends 4 to 7 days in the truck and warehouse and is shipped an average of 1500 miles before being sold, whereas local produce can go from field to market in one or two days. You can sometimes find a special area for local produce at your more savvy supermarkets. 3. Use Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs The energy savings from these bulbs is in the order of 70% as compared with traditional bulbs. Most of the savings comes from cooler operating temperatures. Just change over one bulb a week to a compact fluorescent one. Be sure to turn out all lights when not in use. Surprisingly to some, this saves even more energy. 4. Unplug all those appliances with digital clocks. Sure it is a lot of trouble, too much trouble really. But hey, so is climate change. Or is it? Ask your kids in 20 years. The point is, look for wastage, and then reduce it. 5. Turn off the tap. You can save hundreds to thousands of gallons of water a year by turning off the tap while you brush your teeth. Might as well get used to it. Water is going to get costly. 6. Keep your car tires properly inflated. It looks better that way. Just don't drive the car, which is the best way to save on gas. 7. Stop junk mail. This one's easy, because we all wish it would happen. To make it a reality, contact 41 Pounds , a non-profit organization that contacts junk mail distributors, corporations, etc on your behalf. Visit them at www.41pounds.org. |
